Set up in CDS

  1. Link thickness and set the short-beam dimensions.
  2. Verify the support span and applied total force.
  3. Calculate nominal short-beam stress from the force.
  4. Compare with the scope of the physical strength test.

Inputs for this recorded case
  • 24 × 8 × 4 mm
  • 8 plies / 4 mm
  • Selected force 100 N
  • Reference force 100 N

These are teaching-case inputs, not ASTM-prescribed specimen dimensions or acceptance criteria.

About this ASTM reference

Standard Test Method for Short-Beam Strength of Polymer Matrix Composite Materials and Their Laminates

Active catalog edition checked October 10, 2026. The official standard defines the physical method; the CDS example below has a narrower modeling scope. Full procedures remain on ASTM’s site.

In the Test menu, choose D2344. With bundled records loaded, the Simulation picker also lists this demonstration.

Load & Play test behavior

Playback follows an elastic beam load ramp. It has no calculated damage events. For D2344, only nominal short-beam stress is appropriate screening output; the beam display is not a strength or contact solution.

In Workbench, select the mechanical case and inspect Live Load. Play test opens the eligible Response → Failure calculation. Availability depends on compatible equipment, selected settings and licensed modules. Gauge/specimen displacement excludes frame compliance and grip slip. Playback speed changes viewing speed, not the test’s physical loading rate.

Instructional model comparison, not experimental validation or ASTM certification. Physical testing requires the licensed standard and a qualified test program.
